In 1961, just as NASA launched it is basi man into space, a group of women underwent mystery testing in the hopes of getting America’s initial female astronauts. They passed the same battery of tests at the legendary Lovelace Foundation as did the Mercury 7 astronauts, but they were summarily dismissed by the boys’ club at NASA and on Capitol Hill. The USSR sent it is primary woman into space in 1963; the United States did not follow suit for another twenty years.

For the original time, Martha Ackmann tells the story of the dramatic events surrounding these thirteen noteworthy women, all crackerjack pilots and patriots who at times sacrificed jobs and marriages for a chance to participate in America’s space race versus the Soviet Union. In addition to talking extensive to these women, Ackmann interviewed Chuck Yeager, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, and others at NASA and in the White House with firsthand psychological result of perception learning and reasoning of the program, and includes here never-before-seen photographs of the Mercury 13 passing their Lovelace tests.

Despite the crushing disappointment of observing their dreams being derailed, the Mercury 13 went on to extraordinary accomplishment in their lives: Jerrie Cobb, who begun flying when she was so little she had to sit on pillows to see out of the cockpit, committed her life to flying solo missions to the Amazon rain forest; Wally Funk, who talked her way into the Lovelace trials, went on to become one of the basi female FAA investigators; Janey Hart, mother of eight and, at age forty, the oldest astronaut candidate, had the political savvy to steer the women through congressional hearings and later helped found the National Organization for Women.

A provocative tribute to these extraordinary women, The Mercury 13 is an unforgettable story of determination, resilience, and inextinguishable hope.

Wonderful detail, but not the best book on the subject.

I am an admirer of this fascinatingly readable, lucid and scholarly book, with some very interesting stories of intriguing people. However I found a much superior assessment of the “Mercury 13″ program in Burgess and French’s book Into That Silent Sea: Trailblazers of the Space Era, 1961-1965 (Outward Odyssey: A People’s History of S). In one extraordinary chapter, they capture the true cultural, historical and social context of this program far better than this entire book-length treatment. They also contrast the Soviet women in space program against American efforts far better.

Nevertheless, I would still recommend this book as a very interesting read into a fascinating time in American history, and congratulate the author on her impressive research, including the fullest personal interviewing with the original candidates ever undertaken.

An amazing story.

Whether you’re a fan of America’s space program or simply in need of a great read, do yourself a favor and invest in this book.

A little over forty years ago — when our first astronauts were flying high and America was racing the Soviets for space dominance — a group of two dozen women signed on to take the same tests and training program as the fabled Mercury 7 (John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, etc). These tests were outlined by Tom Wolfe in THE RIGHT STUFF, and have gone down in historical lore as punishing and exacting, but they are nothing compared to what happened to the women next.

Martha Ackmann’s breezy prose and ironic wit are on display here, and she handles the story of these heroic women in an engaging, unbiased way that practically makes the book turn its own pages. I couldn’t put it down, and neither will you. Highly recommended.

All systems go!

Here’s a book that has potential to fuel a few debates. Written by Martha Ackmann, a professor of Women’s Studies at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, the topic hits an unexpected intersection of interests: Early days of manned space flight at NASA, and women’s rights.

Most readers won’t have heard of The Mercury 13, an unofficial group of stalwart women airplane pilots, all tested for potential to become astronauts by the private Lovelace Foundation at the dawn of the space race. While national focus lasered on Alan Shepherd, John Glenn, and the rest of the famous and flamboyant Mercury 7 astronauts who flew the first orbital missions, Jerrie Cobb and her compatriot lady flyers quietly matched, and sometimes surpassed, the test results of the male heros. Accomplished flyers, and businesswomen, the individuals of this group held many aeronautical records and won many air derbys. Some were graduates of the WAC programs of the Second World War, spearheaded by Jackie Cochran. Ackmann paints vivid portraits of each potential astronaut-candidate, and one can easily like these devoted flyers. (Interestingly, the author focuses heavily on the self-destructive political infighting between Cochran and Cobb for leadership of the women-in-space program.)

It’s fascinating to “uncover” this group some forty years later. Who knew? Beyond a few publicity shots that appeared in Life magazine and in hometown papers, the women were hidden, unsanctioned as an official group of any kind, almost a curiosity. Yet, many points raised by Professor Ackmann are provocative: Women weighed less than male counterparts – and would require less rocket fuel; and why was there a requirement of jet-flying experience for astronauts when many animals (female, no less!) were sent aloft in the space capsules.

So where’s the argument? Clearly, Ackmann launches this retrospective on the women-in-space efforts with the intention of demonstrating blatant sexism and its negative effects. Viewed through the lens of post-feminism, one clearly sees malfeasance – from President Johnson who nixes any further testing, to a Neanderthal congressman who jokes about the need for women in space for reproductive purposes to colonize planets. Yet, a young and innocent John Glenn just can’t see beyond what he and America know as the social norms of the times. In 1963, the nation was a decade away from any kind of equal opportunity awareness, and perhaps two decades away from the emergence of political correctness. Were the male leaders of the space program worried about protecting an existing social order, or just worried about beating the Russians to the moon? Therein, the debate. (Enjoy it – far better for you to argue this with your spouse than waste another hour on Reality TV.)

Misunderstood cologne

I’ve read some of the bad reviews here and how they describe the scent and began to ask myself, “why did they buy this in the first place?” I found this for super cheap on Amazon and decided to make this a blind buy after reading some reviews about it. The reviews from other sites mentioned it was a more sophisticated version of Davidoff’s Cool Water, but it really isn’t.

I got this home and decided to try it on, thinking it might have notes of citrus, but this cologne is nothing but an aquatic. At first I was disappointed, but then realized just looking at the design of the box and bottle that this cologne was meant recreate the crisp, clean, and fresh scent coming from the ocean. It’s fresh, aquatic, and has a hint of blueberry.

I’m currently trying to finish up my sporty fragrances, before making this my everyday cologne. I still use this every once in a while when I get tired of the usual frags I use. It’s great, and for the price – who can complain?

Pleasant Fragrance, Great for everyday use

Ok, I thought it’s just 16 bucks for a 3.4Oz bottle, let’s give it a try. I am happy with my decision. It’s mild and not over-powering. As soon as I apply it to my skin, it smells like mild vodka and in few seconds, it gives out a pleasant aquatic fragrance. Although, I have observed that the fragrance on the skin (hand/neck) does not hold all day long but it does keep the fragrance on the shirt. I have tried other fragrances in this price range ($15-30) but very disappointed by their flowery smell. This one does not disappoint. I use this for everyday application. This is definitely not for special occasions, keep a bottle of John Varvatos or BVLGari or something that fits your skin. Goodluck shopping and try it, you might like it as well.

My other colognes are getting jealous

So I’ve tried the classic Nautica fragrance a few years back and don’t remember being ‘too’ blown away by it but this stuff is just awesome. It isn’t overwhelming and has a light, yet very enjoyable aroma. I seriously leave it in my truck and use it all the time. Maybe that’s not good for it but I love using a spray or two before I go wherever I’m headed. You will not be disappointed with this purchase.

Conflicted Love

Powersat (2005) is the first SF novel in the Asteroid Wars series by internal chronology, although the latest published. The author has revisited this series to fill in the back story of Daniel Hamilton Randolph. This is one of the clearest portrayals of the differences between politicians and engineers to date.

In this novel, Dan Randolph goes to work for Yamagata Industries Corporation, helping to build a prototype Solar Power Satellite delivering twelve megawatts from low earth orbit. Once this prototype is operating, Dan returns to the US and founds Astro Manufacturing Corporation. Using the Japanese success to convince a consortium of American and Western European investors of the potential of this technology, Dan starts building a full-sized SPS in Geostationary Orbit.

While the SPS is nearing completion, the reusable spaceplane project suffers a major setback: the prototype breaks up during reentry from orbit, killing the pilot. Dan’s company has already spent billions on the SPS, but this disaster reduces public confidence in Astro Manufacturing. Saito Yamagata offers to buy him out, but Dan refuses this proposition.

Unknown to Randolph and Yamagata, the spaceplane crash was not an accident. A secret group of Near Eastern terrorists has sabotaged the craft. They consider sabotaging the SPS as well, but Asim al-Bashir, a Tunisian oil magnate, suggests another use for the satellite.

Meanwhile, Jane Thornton is working for the presidential campaign of Morgan Scanwell, presently governor of Texas. First she interests Denny O’Brien, her campaign manager, in the man. Then she tries to recruit Dan to the campaign team under the cause of energy independence, but he needs immediate help rather than long term fixes.

Dan finally contacts the FBI office in Houston, telling of the recent deaths of Joe Tenney and Peter Larsen and his suspicions that they were murdered. After hearing his story, the SAC asks why he didn’t report everything at the beginning. Dan points out that the FBI didn’t seem to be doing anything about investigating the crash. Besides, everything is still speculation without a shred of proof.

In this story, the FBI start digging deeper, but don’t find anything definite. Dan’s executive assistant, April Simmonds, becomes involved at the request of FBI agent Kelly Eamons and finds herself threatened by a Latino ex-con who, unknown to her, has already killed two other Astro employees.

The author is probably the most politically orientated SF writer of the current crop. His previous works are heavily oriented toward the political aspects of future technology. In this work, he clearly underscores the limitations of political power.

On the Day of the Bridges — a terrorist incident even larger than 9/11 — Dan and his US Senator ladyfriend cannot agree on a common course of action. He wants to build the SPS, thereby liberating the US from energy dependence on the Near East, but she wants to be reelected to work toward energy independence. She just cannot see that politicians are incapable to creating new technology; their only function is to remove *political* obstacles to such technology. Moreover, she just doesn’t understand why Dan cannot just wait a year for the politicians to support his efforts.

Technology cannot be created in a vacuum; it requires the right people working as a team with the right tools to produce an effective product. Politicians are much like managers when it comes to technological progress; managers are useless without the workers and politicians are useless without technological innovators. Congress can provide incentives to build railroads, but they do not design the locomotives nor do they lay the tracks.

Recommended for Bova fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of technological progress, political intrigue and more than a touch of conflicted love.

Powerful message of hope

My review, enclosed below, was recently published in the Huntsville (AL) Times.

Now in his early 70s, Ben Bova has been writing classic science fiction for over 40 years. His novels are usually set in the 21st century, chronicling adventures in humanity’s early expansion into the solar system. Now, of course, the 21st century has arrived. Rather than becoming depressed that we’re still stuck here on Earth, Bova seems to be energized, particularly by events of the last few years.

In his latest novel, “Powersat,” Bova gives us a “prequel” for Dan Randolph, the idealistic businessman hero of Bova’s Asteroid Wars and other stories – and Randolph looks a lot like a younger version of SpaceShipOne’s Burt Rutan. In an almost-believable near future, Randolph’s struggling company has sunk billions into something he believes will revolutionize the energy industry: a solar power satellite. But completing it and maintaining it affordably depend on a reusable space plane project, grounded at the last minute.

Those who extract wealth from oil, including a group of Arab terrorists, feel threatened by Randolph’s project. Putative supporters come from all directions – but which ones can he trust? Through a surprisingly complex mix of characters, including some major ones who die along the way, Bova builds a predictable but intriguing plot to a suspenseful climax.

“Power” here means more than energy: The power of politics is explored, and the conflict between a man and a woman, sacrificing happiness together in the pursuit of independent ambitions. The ending is well done, but bittersweet.

This novel sometimes feels like a throwback – I suspect at least partly in self-parody – but the conflicts in love, lust and power are eternal, and Bova devotes much more space to them than to the technology the story is nominally about. A memorable page-turner, “Powersat” also provides a powerful message of hope for the future.

Near Term Space Sci Fi at its Capitalistic Best!

In the vast amount of pages shelved in the local bookstore’s “science fiction” section, most is fantasy and what’s left is mostly indistinguishable from fantasy. Once the staple of science fiction, the near-term space novel is an endangered species today. Thank goodness for Bova. His “Grand Tour” series is a monumental, if relatively uncelebrated, journey into the human adventure in the solar system that could take place in our lifetimes.
Of course, predating Bova’s “Grand Tour” there was Dan Randolph, Bova’s industrialist hero in Privateers and Empire Builders. Powersat is a prequel to both Privateers and Empire Builders and in a sense can be seen as the beginning of the Grand Tour series.
Powersat describes the beginning of Astro Manufacturing Corporation, Dan Randolph’s attempt to open space to humanity, make America and freedom stronger, and (of course) make billions of dollars in the process! Randolph’s first project, a solar power satellite to eliminate American dependence on oil, gives the book its title. The story shares much with Bova’s earlier Randolph books… coroprate intrigue, terrorism, boardroom meetings, political philosphy, a pro-space pro-business message, and a good deal of action.
Powersat is, in my opinion, one of Bova’s best works. The story is solid, fast-paced, and rewarding stand alone. However, if you have read any of Bova’s earlier books on Randolph (Privateers, Empire Builders, or The Precipice) you’ll also enjoy scenes played out that are merely alluded to in the other books, including Dan’s relationship with Jane, how Scanlon becomes president, the “alliance” between Yamagata and Astro, and the very first hints that Astro may have to move to Venezuela, among others. What is striking is how Bova pulled it off. In Dan’s first book he was fighting the Soviet Union’s monopoly on space (which looks, uh, unlikely to happen anymore.) Powersat uses the present reality of the war on terror as its historical backdrop. However, past occurences in the earlier books are written first hand in this book and are perfectly consistent with the complete change in geopolitical situation. Not a trivial feat.
Randolph’s story is a truly heroic one. Not many science fiction heroes live’s may truly be lived. However, there is no reason that someone reading Powersat now may not one day build Astro Manufacturing and serve space, freedom, and the pocketbook in the same way Dan does!
