Excellent biography

Leonard Vernon has masterfully balanced scholarly research with entertaining writing. Of particular interest is how he exposed how one biased source, when cited by other biographers, can create a misleading portrait of the subject. The character of a person cannot be fairly assessed outside the cultural and moral context of the time. Vernon made this clear. Frank Hague was not an angel or a devil. Vernon’s biography brings meaning to the phrase “fair and balanced.”

The Life & Times of Jersey City Mayor Frank Hague: “I Am the Law”

What’s great about this book is that it highlights the complexities of Hague’s legacy, complexities which echo that of the man himself. For example, I was shocked to learn that the famous “I am the law” quote, which is typically used to show Hague as a dictator, was actually uttered when the mayor was arguing to get delinquent kids back into school. Hague used his nearly unlimited powers to consolidate his political kingdom; he also used them to provide nearly-universal healthcare, fund special education, and streamline police and fire services, putting him decades ahead of his time. By reading this book you see both sides of Hague – the scheming politician and the benevolent despot. It’s fascinating.

A fair account of a complicated man in a complicated time

This book is one of the first that I have read that actually treats Hague fairly. As a matter of fact it is really the only thing I have ever read that acknowledges many of the good things that he did. Vernon makes a point of spelling out how men like Curly of Boston, who were at least if not more corrupt than Hague are now idolized in Boston, while Hague’s reputation is that of a dirty politician. The other interesting item was the fact that Hague’s well oiled machine was so good that he really never had to resort to voter fraud to win elections. A FANTASTIC READ FOR ANYONE FROM OR WHO HAS AN INTEREST IN NEW JERSEY HISTORY AND/OR POLITICS.

BSA Mil Dot review

This scope is an overall good scope. I mounted it on my remington 700 .30-06. I also added a trejectory knob by Kenton Industries for ~ $70.00 Ths scope handles the recoil fine of a larger caliber. I took the gun coyote hunting yesterday, my only gripes are that when the sun was rising/setting, sun glare was a pretty big problem. I didn’t have the sun shade on, so perhaps it was my fault. My other gripe was nearing dusk (about an hour before sun down) it was nearly impossible to make things out through the scope even if it were clearly evident with the naked eye. I think part of this is due to the fact that it is only a 40mm scope rather than a 50mm. So if your going to hunt in dusk conditions I recomend a scope that is 50mm than 40mm to catch more light nearing dark.

Great Scope

I am recently using the scope on my PSL without any problem yet. It is very easy to make adjustment.NO MORE SCREWDRIVER. Love it and will purchase another for my VARMINT

Target Scope

This scope is a great value for the money. However, don’t expect to much when trying to focus using 24x. Image resolution is a function of objective lens diameter. The 40mm objective lens will be marginal, if you are expecting to see a bullet hole at 200-yds. Seeing holes at 100-yds is no problem. An 18x will allow that. Thus you do not need a spotting scope.

Magnification can be misleading in that high magnification just produces a larger blur. The objective [front lens] produces the image that the eyepiece magnifies.

If you are shooting varmits at extreme ranges, they don’t have to appear in absolute focus. All you need to do is to get them in the cross-hairs. I also use a 50mm sniper scope that is clearer, but it is physically larger and must be mounted on higher rings.

My recommendation is to define your primary scope purpose and then try one out. You must balance physical size and convenience to practical performance. If you do this, you will not be disappointed by the scope not meeting your expectations.

a life saver!

I first checked this out of my local library, and then didn’t want to return it!

I love friends and cocktails but HATE entertaining, cooking, cleaning, yadda yadda. This gave many practical tips and ideas that actually had me looking forward to giving a party!

ANYONE looking for simple entertaining ideas that WORK will love this book.

Yes, You and have fun entertaining.

I purchased this book on the way to a diplomatic assignment. It offers a wide variety of useful and entertaining information. I often give to new brides and recommend it to experienced friends who want to entertain more. It covers a range from parties in the home to welcoming house guests. The friendly easy way it is writen inspires confidence in the new hostess and encourages experimentation for the more experienced party giver. It is a smart addition to any library and a great gift.

Super Cool Book!

I was at one time a hesitant host. I figured you had to be the perfect housekeeper/decorator/cook in order to host a decent party. Since I’m none of these things (not even in my wildest fantasies), I was always very intimidated by the thought of having people over.

Well, I decided I needed to get over that. Along with some decent cookbooks, I picked up this book in my local library and LOVED it! In addition to some wonderful advice, Paula dispels the “perfection” myth, proving all a good host needs is a little organization and a lot of heart. ) If your guests are made to feel like you REALLY want them there, they won’t care if the soup is blue (ala Bridget Jones) or the cat licked all the salt off of the mixed nuts. Serve enough alcohol, and they won’t even notice.

Paula also throws in some funny stories, facts and quotes. I enjoyed the book so much, I went ahead and bought myself a copy so I can refer to it whenever I’m planning something. It never fails to a) give me confidence and b) make me chuckle.

Fits and performs perfectly

If you have shopped around for Dell laptop batteries, you know that this one is WAY cheaper than the one that Dell sells directly. My original Dell battery only lasted 2 years so why would I go to Dell and pay $150 for a replacement when I could get a no-frills brand battery for only $28 including shipping? Even if this no-frills battery only lasts me 6 months, I am still way ahead of the game. OK, I will come down from my soapbox and tell you that this $28 battery fit perfectly into our Dell laptop, and performs well. After a full charge, it runs the laptop for many hours before needing a recharge. Even at $100, this would be a great deal. At $28, this is a no-brainer. I recommend this battery for anyone who needs a replacement or spare battery for thier Dell laptop.

let me start out by saying that I was quite skeptical of buying a battery online for half the price that Dell offers them at, but being the extremely broke college student that I am, I really didn’t have much of a choice. Let me tell you that so far, this product is great. (its only been a few days, but all seems well) Fits perfectly into my inspiron 1525, and holds a charge for over 3 hrs while surfing the internet and through constant use. I would suggest this product to anyone and am extremely satisfied. great product, and it arrived at my door within 4 days. Will change my rating to a 5 star after i have owned it for a month or so if it continues to work like this.

Buyer BEWARE

I tried to save money and it came back to bite me. The battery does not charge. My Dell Inspirion 1545 says plugged in not charging. It didn’t work straight out of the package. VERY disappointing! Sadly, I even read the reviews of this happening to others and thought surely it wouldn’t happen to me. How could someone sell a faulty item and get away with it? I so wish I had just bought a battery from Dell. I guess its time to read the return policy. I will update after I return it.

Excellent sound quality, poor build quality. I’ve owned 3, and all 3 are dead.

I’m sure this review, as with all other negative reviews, is going to get a “this was not helpful” rating. Look, I get it.. the X-Mini II is an AWESOME product and nobody should to talk bad about it, right? At least hear me out first.. because I’ve been using these for almost a year and have owned 3 of them. I think that earns me the right to an honest negative review. And remember, most people review products shortly after they buy them.. I’ve actually spent a lot of time using them.

I absolutely loved mine when I first got it. I showed it to lots of friends and all my coworkers, many of which have since bought their own. It’s an excellent little speaker. The sound quality is amazing for such a small package.. the build quality feels very solid. Sadly, it’s what’s inside that counts.. and what’s inside is junk. I’ve owned 3 of these speakers and all 3 are now dead. Here’s the series of events that led to this bad review:

X-Mini #1 – Bought my first one about 10 months ago on Amazon. Loved everything about it. One thing that really stood out (aside from excellent audio quality) was the build quality. Very solid construction. I liked it so much I bought another one for a family member, which we’ll call X-Mini #2.

X-Mini #2 – Worked fine, but I noticed the build quality wasn’t as good as the first one I bought. The once soft rubber-like audio cable was now stiff, cheap, shiny plastic. The power switch was now flimsy and didn’t operate as solidly as my first one. The sound wasn’t quite as good, and it was a tiny bit lighter weight. After about 1 month, I started having audio hiccups from it and had to contact the store (possibly power surges?). They sent me a replacement and let me keep this one. The replacement they sent me is X-Mini #3.

X-Mini #3 – Same lower-quality construction. By this point it was obvious that X-Mi had started to cheap out on the materials of the speaker. The once rock-solid speaker now feels like a cheap toy. About two weeks after owning this speaker, the battery stopped working. It no longer holds a charge and has to be plugged in via USB or a wall outlet in order to play sound. I’m not going to bother the company I bought this one from because they already sent me a free replacement.. now it’s up to X-Mi.

Now I have 1 good speaker (my original), one defective one, and one with a dead battery, right? Wrong.

Back to X-Mini #1 – My beloved original, now, after 10 months of light use (maybe 3 hours a week), is dead. The battery is having the same issue as X-Mini #3. It will no longer play sound without being attached to external power.

I’m done with these things. I want to love it.. I really do.. and several months ago I would have given this thing 6 out of 5 stars if it were possible. I can no longer do that. They simply don’t last. I’m extremely disappointed with X-Mi for cheaping out on materials and have sent them an email explaining this.

If you’ve been able to snag one that lasts longer than a year, consider yourself lucky. I envy you.

Great sound from this SMALL speaker!

First off, This speaker is incredible for it’s size. There is almost no distortion in sound when playing on MAX volume. It comes with a USB splitter, to charge and a 3.5mm plug so that you can connect multiple X Mini II’s together. It also comes with a handy bag to store your X Mini II in. I had an Altec Lansing iM207 before this, and the X Mini II blew the iM207 away!!!. The size difference was one thing, and the sound quality was another. The iM207 also ran on 3 AAA batteries. There will also be distortion in the iM207 on full volume. The playtime with the batteries was terrible. I had to switch batteries every week, with only around 20minutes of playtime each day. For the X Mini II, it can play up to 8 hours. There are also LED indicators of when you need to charge again, and when it is fully charged.

Best small speaker I’ve found

I bought this and the iHome rechargeable mini-speaker at the same time. The iHome mini-speaker is much louder, but the sound quality of the X-Mini II is better for music, at least in my opinion. You get more of the high and low tones with the X-Mini II, and I am surprised that it does not have a tinny sound. The iHome speaker is good for movies or if you need a loud but small speaker for parties. The X-Mini II is slightly larger than the iHome speaker, but not much. I recommend the X-Mini II for listening to music, and it works really well with my netbook or with an mp3 player.
