Have you ever imagined what it would be like to attend a Monday Night Football game live in Las Vegas? What would the NBA or NHL playoff experience fetch to ‘Sin City’? Or how in regards to an Opening Day MLB commence in the desert?

I may tell you precisely what it would be like. The back of your game ticket would be a scratch-off lottery game for lap dances and convertibles. There would be brilliantly lit slot machines in the bathroom stalls. At halftime, an opposing fan would be lowered into a cage and fed to a pair of white Bengal tigers. The vendors would be seven-foot mutants from Eastern Europe and the cheerleaders would be South American vixens. There would be midgets and clowns and a giant cash tree that one lucky fan would get to shake at each home game.

It would be beautiful.

Las Vegas and a professional sports team are a natural fit. There are few things as American as the cultish pride, monetary excess and choreographed violence involved in pro athletics in this country. It’s in our blood. It’s our birthright. And America’s Playground is the only city in the country that could perhaps match that sort of frenzy and bacchanalia stride-for-stride.

The population of Las Vegas has tripled over the course of the last 20 years to 1.8 million, and it remains one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Its economy pumps out a staggering $72 billion annually, with closely 38 million tourists blowing through town each year and contributing their mortgage/retirement/child’s college fund to that honey pot. If we assume three-fifths of all Las Vegas visitors are sports fans – a measurement the Founding Fathers would approve – that would yield a pool of roughly 24 million fans to draw from.

“I’ve said before that just like Dallas is America’s Team, I veritably think that a team in Las Vegas would be the World’s Team,” Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said. “We genuinely have the type of cosmopolitan persons out here that would hug the hometown team.”

Goodman is an outspoken, martini-swilling, showgirl-loving Philadelphia native and the ace in the hole for the city’s bid for pro sports. He is disarmingly honest, and has the guile and keenness one would suppose from an attorney who employed to defend such remorseless mobsters as Meyer Lansky and Anthony Spilotro. Goodman is on record in help of canings and thumb amputations as punishment, and has shown up in public surrounded by Elvis impersonators. Would you bet versus him?

Goodman has lobbied and prodded owners and commissioners in all major sports to relocate or exaggerate to his orgiastic oasis. Vegas presently hosts major events in boxing, NASCAR, Arena Football, Triple-A baseball and tennis. Also, the city locked up a bid to host the 2007 NBA All-Star Game. They will be the firstborn non-NBA city to do so.

With the recent financial difficulties of pro sports franchises in Florida, Portland, Seattle, San Diego and New Orleans, the number of potential suitors for Las Vegas seems to be at it is pinnacle. Goodman said that discussions have been “real hot” with the NHL.

However, not everyone shares his optimism.

“I believe Las Vegas will not be badly considered until somebody steps up and builds a new arena to host a team,” said Jay Kornegay, executive conductor of the sportsbook at the Las Vegas Hilton. “Right now it seems like Las Vegas is just being used as a pawn for a heap of owners to strike deals around the country.”

Sin City’s biggest strength is also it is biggest weakness when it comes to seducing a team into it is hypnotic trance. The reason there isn’t a team in Las Vegas already has little to do with being the 47th ranked television market, it is lack of a state-of-the-art arena or it is graveyard of defunct pro franchises since 1976. No, Las Vegas doesn’t have a team today because it permits legalized gambling and is seen by a heap of as a modern Sodom and Gomorrah.

It’s true that gambling and hedonism are at the soul of Las Vegas. But that’s what gives it such a distinctive kinship with Sports. Vegas is Switzerland with slot machines. The hometown commitment is to the point disseminate and each precious edge that she provides. People there are fans of every one and no one, with allegiance based on whoever provides the best prospect for a payday. Sports fans in Las Vegas are mercenaries, bounty hunters and war profiteers. And it’s improbable that their attitude will ever change.

That is what strikes Fear into the rulers of the major sports. They are affrighted of point-shaving or players consorting with criminal elements. They are frighted of anything that could be viewed as a conflict of interest and their hard-line stance versus gambling is done in an effort to preserve the integrity of the game. (That is, the integrity remaining after sham officiating, performance heightening drugs and uneven distribution of wealth.)

Needless to say, this stance by owners and executives is the height of hypocrisy. Goodman stated that the NFL’s public activenesses and outward opposition to gambling is “the most disingenuous reasoning” that he’d ever heard. He likewise believes there’s already illegal gambling at live sporting events in most other sports.

“There’s more bets taken for the duration of an NBA basketball game at Madison Square Garden then there is on that game here,” Goodman said. “Think when it comes to it, you going to sit around watching 10 guys run up and down the court for two hours without galore cash going around? I didn’t think so.”

For my money, the owners and execs are the real criminals. They are vicious and vile, feasting on the flesh of children and old people. Just look at Al Davis. They loot the public treasury for a new stadium. They charge $8.50 for a beer. They assert their low-rent, second-rate organizations are perpetually “rebuilding”. They draft with regard to emotions unstable and intellectually shoal children, get them hopped up on Potential and mescaline and turn them loose on society. Then the players are cut loose after they become multiple felons.

It’s inconceivable that owners and league executives may pass judgment on Las Vegas or legalized professional gambling on the basis of numerous moral authority. They have more blood on their hands than most, and since they wouldn’t protest the urges of greed and temptation they don’t suppose anybody else to either.

“They don’t realize the Nevada sports books and the league are on the same side,” Kornegay said. “We both want ‘true’ games. If any person gets injure on a crooked game it’s the sports books. This is why we have so some policies, regulatings and procedures to make sure the games stay true.”

“Someday they will realize that they need us a lot more than we need them,” Goodman said of sports leagues.

The NHL and MLB have stated that if Las Vegas was awarded a franchise the casinos and books would have to agree not to take bets on the home team. This arrangement was a condition of hosting the NBA All-Star Game, and had been in place for UNLV and Nevada athletics until recently. The NBA has said that the books would have to agree not to take any action on any NBA games – amount of time – before Las Vegas would be given it is own team.

Over $2.5 billion was gambled through legal channels in Las Vegas in 2005. Nearly $400 million of that was on the NBA. Those are high stakes for casino owners and operators, in particular since they form the central cohesive source of support and stability of the local economy but stand to gain little from the presence of a pro team. Also, what if Las Vegas were awarded an MLB team and it made the World Series, or if they got an NFL team and it played in the Super Bowl? There would be riots in the street and potentially billions of dollars lost.

Should Las Vegas have a pro sports team? Could it even handle one? We will see. But when asked what the odds of Las Vegas having a pro franchise by 2010 were, Goodman didn’t hesitate: “It’s a guarantee.”

Hmm. A guarantee in Vegas? If you’re more than willing to buy that, I’m more than willing to bet that you’ll be welcome in Sin City anytime.

Limousines may make a lasting impression

Why do you use a limousine service? It is genuinely finelooking simple. It is to convey an effigy of success to clients, potential clients, staff and other when traveling to and from an event. The amount of value gained from these necessary humans having a good time and coming away with a outstanding impression is often times immeasurable to an organization.

My latest travel venture was to the Las Vegas strip for the RE/MAX International convention. It was a great experience. What added to it was that I was met at the airport by a limo driver who was courteous, friendly and ready to take us to the hotel. Wow, I thought. He cared sufficient with regards to me to make the trip to the hotel not just comfortable, but luxurious. Nicely done!

A simple trip to the hotel is one thing. Many companies go even further. They want their clients and guests to mingle, party and have fun TOGETHER, so they provide probabilities for them to take limo rides together at events. It is a outstanding way for persons to safely have fun.

Going to the next step. I do not grasp why more people don’t take the prospect to BRAND their limousine experiences. How do you do it? Simply ask the limousine company of your choice regarding “limousine wraps”.

What are limousine wraps?

They are advertisements that are printed on huge screen printers and used to the exterior of a car, much like a paint job. They are distinctively FULL COLOR rolling advertisements for your company. I saw one of these done for YAHOO! while I was in Las Vegas. Very cool!

More significantly than cool, they were advertizing to the public, branding to their guests, and treating their staff to a particular experience all at the same time.

Is it expensive?

Not really. It will depend on what you want and the time frame that you are talking about. This is where you need to TALK with the limousine companies. They may provide something that fits your budget and accomplishes your selling objectives.

Why don’t more persons do it?

I think it is largely because they ASSUME that it is too expensive. They assume that it is too time consuming and they assume that it is too difficult. The truth is, with a little consultation and help, your limousine company may provide an magnificent product without breaking the bank.

Limousines may make a lasting impression

Why do you use a limousine service? It is in truth gorgeous simple. It is to convey an effigy of success to clients, potential clients, staff and other when traveling to and from an event. The amount of value gained from these crucial persons having a good time and coming away with a great impression is oftentimes immeasurable to an organization.

My latest travel venture was to the Las Vegas strip for the RE/MAX International convention. It was a outstanding experience.

They want their clients and guests to mingle, party and have fun TOGETHER, so they provide prospects for them to take limo rides together at events. It is a great way for humans to safely have fun.

Going to the next step. I do not comprehend why more persons don’t take the prospect to BRAND their limousine experiences. How do you do it? Simply ask the limousine company of your choice in regards to “limousine wraps”.

What are limousine wraps?

They are advertisements that are printed on huge screen printers and used to the exterior of a car, much like a paint job. They are distinctively FULL COLOR rolling advertisements for your company. I saw one of these done for YAHOO! while I was in Las Vegas. Very cool!

More significantly than cool, they were advertising to the public, branding to their guests, and treating their staff to a special experience all at the same time.

Is it expensive?

Not really. It will depend on what you want and the time frame that you are talking about. This is where you need to TALK with the limousine companies. They may provide something that fits your budget and accomplishes your selling objectives.

Why don’t more humans do it?

I think it is largely because they ASSUME that it is too expensive. They assume that it is too time consuming and they assume that it is too difficult. The truth is, with a little consultation and help, your limousine company may provide an magnificent product without breaking the bank.

This year at the Emmys Top Chef won the Emmy for Best Reality Series. A huge honor definitely long overdue. This season – season 6 in Las Vegas – has been on preorder with Amazon for what seems like an eternity. I don’t really understand why. I did purchase season 5 New York from them but Top Chef has a special deal with Target and many seasons available on dvd are only available at Target. I purchased this amazing 6th season of Top Chef at Target months age. Those of you endlessly waiting for it on Amazon know that you can get it at your local Target.

This season is definitely a must have for it is the season that earned the show its Emmy. Padma Lakshmi is the perfect hostess as always and head judge Tom Colicchio and judges Gail Simmons of Food and Wine and Toby Young are back with 17 new contestants. Each episode is amazing. There is a quickfire challenge which leads to the elimination challenge and all are creative and display the chefs at their cuilinary best or struggling at their problematic worst. Las Vegas works very well with this show and what I love is you don’t need to be a professional chef or know all culinary terms to be interested in this show. I love food and am fully enthralled in the personalities involved but moreso with the skills these chefs possess and can’t wait to see what dishes they will come up with. This season we have two brothers as contestants which adds a definite twist. Also the ante really is upped with the creativity of the elimination challenges. The mix of personalities and skills of the chefs is also very well done. Judging is done honestly and fairly and judge’s table is a definite show highlight.

I adore Padma, Tom and Gail and by now they seem like family. I watched this season when it aired on tv and am now watching it for the 3rd time on dvd. Many episodes have added footage and to watch it with no commercial breaks adds to the intensity of the ongoing contest as the chefs are voted off one by one. This show will entertain and educate. It is not a reality show that is just a mindless waste of time. It instead uses reality tv to educate all on cooking, competion and we meet the highest caliber chefs as judges and special guests. I think almost anyone would be highly entertained by this very high quality show.

An added twist is having a pair of twin brothers as competitors. The quickfire challenges are great, and the competitors show their awe-inspiring style. It’s cooking kicked up several notches. Within the fantasy world of Las Vegas, they bring their culinary dreams to reality. In a city that has simalcrums of ancient Rome&Paris, they bring real food to the plate. The final four go to the Napa&Sonoma Valleys for their competitions. They do street food at Mustards Grill Napa Valley Cookbook–Cindy Pawcyln herself has been on Top Chef Masters. Later, they go to Keane country: go west, young man.(Cyrus restaurant chef & owner Douglas Keane)(Interview): An article from: Art Culinaire in Healdsburg. It’s a fun show, and the sixth season is one of the best! Bon appetit!

Some interesting content is lost in an intrusive and bland soundtrack and repetitive, predictable editing.
What images come to mind when you think of Las Vegas?
Mobsters and showgirls, magicians and tigers, multimillion-dollar poker games and prizefights; towering signboards that light up the night in front of ever more spectacular casino hotels.
But real people live here, too–over a million today, two million tomorrow. Greater Las Vegas has long been the quickest growing metropolitan area in America. And almost each aspect of it is citizens’ lives is influenced by the almighty power of the gambling industry.
A team of fifteen reporters led by David Littlejohn, together with prize winning photo-journalist Eric Gran, studied the “real” Las Vegas–the city beyond the Strip and Downtown–for the better percentage of a year. They talked to teenagers (whose suicide and dropout rates frighten parents), senior citizens (many of whom spend their days playing bingo and the slots), Mexican immigrants (who build the new houses and clean the hotels), homeless people and angry blacks, as well as local police, active Christians, city officials, and prostitutes. They looked into the local churches, the powerful labor unions, pawn shops, the real estate boom, defiant ranchers to the north, and dire forecastings that the city is regarding to run out of water.
Proud Las Vegans assert that theirs is just a friendly southwestern boomtown–”the finest community I have ever lived in,” says Bishop Daniel Walsh, who comes from San Francisco. But their picture of Las Vegas as a vibrant, civic-minded metropolis conflicts with proof of transiency, rootlessness, political impotence, and social dysfunction.
In this close-up investigation of the real lives being led in America’s most tourist-jammed, gambling-driven city, readers will discover a Las Vegas very dissimilar from the one they may have seen or imagined.

From Publishers WeeklyLas Vegas deserves a deeper lookAand this book makes a good start. As Littlejohn, Professor Emeritus of journalism at the UC-Berkeley, points out in his introduction, not only is Las Vegas the quickest growing urban area in the country, it is the number one tourist and convention destination, in spite of it is disturbingly high rates of crime, bankruptcy, divorce and high school dropouts. The shadow behind those statistics, of course, is the gambling industry on the Strip, which Littlejohn’s writing team of Berkeley graduate students have kept with resolute determination in mind. A social worker says the “24-hour town” aspect furthers gambling and alcohol troubles amid the poor, while a family therapist contends that it frays marriages. For the elderly, casino bingo halls have become de facto social centers, while the growth of megachurches seems to mirror the bigger-is-better casino entertainment. Specific chapters focus on black Las Vegas, water policy and the sex trade. Some of the writing is awkward, and the transitions among chapters are not always smooth, but Littlejohn’s cautionary conclusion rings true: a lot of trends visible in Las Vegas portend an America of unplanned growth, but the city will stay sui generis.
From Kirkus ReviewsA mixed bag of essays, largely good, on America’s strangest city. Las Vegas, writes Wall Street Journal correspondent Littlejohn (Architect: The Life and Work of Charles W. Moore, 1984, etc.), is the extreme company town, a huge and growing city that pretends to economic diversity while drawing most of it is revenue from a single industry: casino gambling. Visitors to the city leave behind galore $5 billion yearly at the gaming tables, to say not one thing of billions more at hotels, restaurants, and buying goods centers; little wonder, Littlejohn suggests, that so a heap of other American cities and states are plunging headlong into legalized, government-controlled lotteries and casinos. And little wonder, he adds, that so galore persons are now flocking to Las Vegas to stake a portion in the jackpot: amid 1990 and 1997 the metropolitan area grew by an astonishing 48 percent, “a record no other big U.S. region even comes close to matching.” This growth, in Littlejohn’s view, is of itself neither good nor bad; it merely is. His subscribers take a likewise morally distanced, reportorial point of view. One, Boston Globe writer Marie Sanchez, travels inside a Las Vegas high school to find widespread drug use, alienation, violence, and a penchantat least amidst girlsto turn to prostitution for spending cash around Christmas; another, freelance journalist Lisa Moskowitz, looks into the surging growth of housing in the Las Vegas Valley, a growth that comes in defiance of all economic senseand of the arid realities of this desert place; still another, magazine editor Lori Leibovich, writes of the seemingly contradictory rise of vast “megachurches” that rival the casinos for architectural splendor. Not all the pieces are as good, but the volume adds up to a priceless snapshot of America’s fastest-growing city. (For another tour of Las Vegas, see David Thomson, In Nevada, p. 1213.) — Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Review
“In a shattering series of quick-cut profiles and scenes, Littlejohn’s team of crack reporters spotlight the voices of off-the-beaten-track Las Vegas–homeless denizens of desperate shelters, residents of the soft pogroms of North (Hispanic) and West (African-American) Vegas, the aimless teens, bingo junkies, sex workers, sagebrush rebels, and real estate speculators who live and wither by the almighty buck, and the cops, union organizers and preachers who control or mitigate the aftermaths of capitalism run amok. A gritty, people-centered montage of our saddest American dream.”–Peter Nabokov

Among the more “enlightened” things that we simple minded humans would never recognise with regards to this city are: Seniors like to play BINGO. Some teens growing up in Las Vegas drink and get into trouble – some even have children before they are married! The local police division protect tourists downtown and on the strip! (Can you just imagine that?). Casinos have their own private security force, and cash flows free and easy! The education scheme of this city (and it ought to be only this city) is over-crowded and under funded, and there are less expensive, and rapidly and without delay growing southwestern cities than Las Vegas! The book is merely not helpful and not interesting given all of the maladies this author cites are around “In spades” if you will, in other cities. I am not sure what is so Real in regards to this book, except that it is clear this man wants his two rolls of quarters back.

Rigas
This book is primarily written by a handful of contributors, primarily journalists and edited by a seasoned journalist and former journalism professor at the University of California-Berkeley. Because of the number of authors, the quality of the chapters vary, but in general, this was a very noble effort and a well-thought out and imposed project. The idea, according to the editor, was to demystify the resort destination and to look at it as a real, even though distinctive American city.
The introduction by the editor is excellent, as is his epilogue, synthesizing and analyzing the content of the book.
The chapters in amongst talk about respective distinct elements of the city, the instructional system, the plight of the homeless, the big population of hispanic immigrant workers, the casino and sex “industries”, the scarce water supply, etc. The book likewise attempts to talk about such things as the special characteristics of Nevadans.
Many of these chapters are very well written, and are all very easy to read. Some of the writers tend to fall into a pattern that I find exceptionally troublesome about, in particular, television journalism. The author is looking to make a point (for example, there are a lot of kids in the Clark County School District who use drugs). So, they consultation and present the most shocking results from their consultations regarding what a few kids say with regards to their drug use. Never mind the fact that one could have in all likelihood received similar remarks from a good deal of kids in any other city. Reading the chapter on the schools, I would think that it is out of the question to grow up in Las Vegas and to be a good kid and not drop out and go onto college. However, rather on the contrary, over the last 4 years that I have lived in this city, I have interviewed 30+ high school seniors on behalf of my alma mater on the East Coast. I have met kids who are great students, have a good deal of of the most eminent test scores in the nation, are deeply involved in athletics, music, and community service and have never touched a drug and don’t regularly hang out on the strip.
It is very difficult, I believe, as a visitor, to get a true picture of this city. The tourism economy actively attempts to manufacture and maintain the atmosphere of “anything goes” “have fun and drink and gamble and do whatsoever you want” for the tourists. However, as the editor astutely notes, beyond the strip, “many conditions recorded in this book will be recognized by Americans from other states and cities…”

Beyond galore of the shortcomings, this is a very well-done work. Some of the writers expended a great deal of time locally researching their work. The introspective thoughts by the editor actually pull it together. As a resident, I find this book helps me to get galore critical distance to evaluate the city in which I live. My only fear is that for someone not intimate with the city, the work of galore of the writers may paint a uncharacteristically negative picture in a heap of cases that does not give Las Vegas the proper perspective in these difficulties relative to other places.

12 of 18 persons found the following review helpful.
Somewhat depressing, in spite of attempting not to be
By Harry Thomas
Every play needs it is actors, and someone has to sweep up the hall as well. Littlejohn says that they didn’t seek to focus on the negatives, but the result is that while Las Vegas may be the quickest growing city in America, both in jobs and population; it doesn’t sound that likeable other than as a place to visit.

Most of the reports are glum, and on occasion downright disheartening. Sure, a lot of cities have these problems, but most of them try to do something in regards to it. In Vegas, if it negatively affects the Industry, then it is either ignored or swept under the carpet. It puts a dull finish on what is other than as supposed or expected staged as a glittering jewel.

As the doorman at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, keeping track of all the conventions and events was essential not just for giving tourists popular info but to severely prepare for what was coming next, and there was always something coming next. Las Vegas was built for change. If the National Finals Rodeo was coming, the city would prepare for that kind of crowd. Restaurants and buffets would serve ribs and beans. Country acts would be booked in the showrooms and lounges. Destinations for merchandise; parties, and nightclubs would all offer the cowboy and cowgirl anything their hearts desired. Then, within days an exclusively dissimilar convention or event would commence which would manufacture a whole new transformation. Even a big showroom like MGM’s Grand Garden Arena could be a dirt filled calf roping and Brahma bull riding arena one week, and within a day or two be transformed into The Ice Capades or a concert hall, even a boxing ring. It was amazing but hey, this is what Las Vegas does, and it does it very well. But as an employee, it was insane. For me, it was like a swirl of dissimilar colors, and I had to adjust to each one.

Of all the conventions, of all the concerts or holidays, not one thing came close to a Mike Tyson boxing event. For myself, preparing for a major fight night, meant a large total of feed and rest a couple days before. But a Mike Tyson fight was a night that would test all the training, all the longanimity and skill of a doorman. It was like getting on a roller-coaster; once the ride begins there’s no turning back. All one may do is ride it out. On those fight nights, all that Las Vegas offered was sold out. There were no rooms left vacant, no un-booked restaurants, not one nightclub that would let you in.

It wasn’t the amount of humans who came into town to see the Tyson fight that was a concern; it was those who came into town for the event. It was always a cross-cultural mass of people; Beverly Hills mixed with gang-bangers, mixed with the standard hard partying fight crowd. It was a melting pot of persons from all over the country. These crowds were once in a while explosive, unpredictable, and always had a large total of cash to throw around. Throw into the mix alcohol and drugs, and it was a major challenge. It was a time for the city to go into survival mode for 24 hours. I worked five Mike Tyson fights and it was always a matter of attempting to keep everything in control. For hotel employees, we worked our asses off. We had to be flexible, not confront, and give persons the best service we could.

As a doorman, the chaos of a fight night was like a double edged sword. The city streets were always gridlocked with cars, not one thing moved. The cabs and limousines could only trickle in and no one could get transportation without me. The demand for transportation became big with so little supply. Taxi lines of hundreds of people would stretch over 200 yards while still other groups would gather at the front of the line where I stood, waving hundred-dollar bills in my face.

The noise was earsplitting with all the yelling, the air scarcely breathable with all the cab fumes and cigar smoke. The cash being thrown at me so fast and furious, that I couldn’t do not forget who handed it to me. Men threatened, women offered themselves to me for the prospect that I would get them transportation. And when it was over my voice would be gone. It would take days for my body to recover. Initially nights like these affrighted me but in time, I became addicted to the energy of one hundred thousand people, the unbelievable amounts of cash being thrown around, and even the power of the position.

From Library JournalThe Linux operating system has grown out of a free Unix-compatible kernel written by Linus Torvalds. Free means the user is free to run, copy, distribute, study, change, sell, and improve the software as long as the source code is always included in the next release, which means that those who follow are capable to do the same. Since Linux is multitasking and processing, it supports multiple users doing multiple actions. And because Linux is designed for running on cheap, somewhat out-of-date hardware, Linux has proven worthful to libraries of all sizes who may not afford constant, costly upgrade fees for new software. If you are fascinated in exploring Linux, these three books serve as a great combined-use package. The Sobell book is voluminous?it includes his primary book from last year, A Practical Guide to Linux (LJ 9/1/97), along with a copy of Caldera OpenLinux Lite and much more on the CD-ROMs. The IDG books will be priceless late-night resources in those magical moments when things go wrong.
3 of 3 humans found the following review helpful.
Book Title will have to be HANDS ON UNIX. No LINUX content.
By wpostma@sympatico.ca
This book is well written. I rely on it, and refer to it constantly.

If you are new to any form of UNIX, you will need to fabricate a good working noesis of the UNIX tool set. You ought to learn in regards to the shells (bash, ksh, etc), the editors (emacs, vi, joe) other mutual unix tools (make, awk, pine), and the X-Windows system. For learning with regards to these things, this book is very good.

What I don’t like is that the book genuinely must be called “HANDS ON UNIX”. Only an occasional remark in the text reminds you that this is a LINUX book. The book seems titled by the publisher to cash in on the LINUX buzz, rather than according to it’s content. Less than 1% of the content is LINUX specific. There is a 7 page appendix on the emulators available for LINUX, and in regards to ten pages of Linux specific content int he introductory hundred pages.

Chapter two just blithely states that “This book does not talk about hardware selection nor the installation of Linux” and then jumps right to logging into a UNIX command shell.

To this day I’m still looking for decent coverage of buying a Linux compatible system, system installation, hard disk setup, network and sound card setup, dial up networking setup, and other hardware and installation manuals.

There is not one thing on recompiling the kernel. The only tweaking section that I found utile was the XFree86 section. The tips on window managing directors and setting up your X configuration is gorgeous good.

If you are an at-home Linux user, you ARE the network administrator, and scheme administrator. If you’re looking for a one-volume omnibus, this is not it.

The content in this book will in all likelihood never become dated. It’s timeless unix stuff.

Sobell’s book doesn’t cover everything, but the topics he does cover are well presented, without doubt or question written and often cross-referenced in the text itself, which save a lot of frantic paging around to find a forgotten detail.

Sobell focuses on basic Linux programming and development, rather than installation, setup, hardware, etc., so his book makes a good associate volume to the “sysadmin” handbooks on the market, which many times come up short on details with regards to the OS language and utilities.

It actually helped me once i had Linux installed. Of course if you are still engaged in a struggle with getting Linux installed then look elsewhere. Overall an Excellent buy. Yet the software bundle is a little lacking. The software bundled does not actually demonstrate the free software capablenesses of Linux giving careful consideration to most of it is on a 90 day evaulation period.

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to attend a Monday Night Football game live in Las Vegas? What would the NBA or NHL playoff experience fetch to ‘Sin City’? Or how with regards to an Opening Day MLB commence in the desert?

I may tell you incisively what it would be like. The back of your game ticket would be a scratch-off lottery game for lap dances and convertibles. There would be brilliantly lit slot machines in the bathroom stalls. At halftime, an opposing fan would be lowered into a cage and fed to a pair of white Bengal tigers. The marketers would be seven-foot mutants from Eastern Europe and the cheerleaders would be South American vixens.

Its economy pumps out a staggering $72 billion annually, with almost 38 million tourists blowing through town each year and contributing their mortgage/retirement/child’s college fund to that honey pot.

“We in truth have the type of cosmopolitan people out here that would hug the hometown team.”

Goodman is an outspoken, martini-swilling, showgirl-loving Philadelphia native and the ace in the hole for the city’s bid for pro sports. He is disarmingly honest, and has the guile and keenness one would suppose from an attorney who used to defend such remorseless mobsters as Meyer Lansky and Anthony Spilotro. Goodman is on record in aid of canings and thumb amputations as punishment, and has shown up in public surrounded by Elvis impersonators.

They will be the introductory non-NBA city to do so.

With the recent financial difficultnesses of pro sports franchises in Florida, Portland, Seattle, San Diego and New Orleans, the number of potential suitors for Las Vegas seems to be at it is pinnacle. Goodman said that discussions have been “real hot” with the NHL.

However, not everyone shares his optimism.

“I believe Las Vegas will not be severely considered until someone steps up and builds a new arena to host a team,” said Jay Kornegay, executive conductor of the sportsbook at the Las Vegas Hilton. “Right now it seems like Las Vegas is just being used as a pawn for some owners to strike deals around the country.”

Sin City’s biggest strength is also it is biggest weakness when it comes to seducing a team into it is hypnotic trance. The reason there isn’t a team in Las Vegas already has little to do with being the 47th rated television market, it is lack of a state-of-the-art arena or it is graveyard of defunct pro franchises since 1976. No, Las Vegas doesn’t have a team today because it permits legalized gambling and is seen by some as a progressed Sodom and Gomorrah.

It’s true that gambling and hedonism are at the soul of Las Vegas. But that’s what gives it such a distinguishable kinship with Sports. Vegas is Switzerland with slot machines. The hometown dedication is to the point disseminate and each precious edge that she provides. People there are fans of everyone and no one, with allegiance based on whoever provides the best probability for a payday. Sports fans in Las Vegas are mercenaries, bounty hunters and war profiteers. And it’s improbable that their attitude will ever change.

That is what strikes Fear into the rulers of the major sports. They are scared of point-shaving or players consorting with criminal elements. They are afraid of anything that could be viewed as a conflict of interest and their hard-line stance versus gambling is done in an venture to preserve the integrity of the game.

He also believes there’s already illegal gambling at live sporting events in most other sports.

“There’s more bets taken for the duration of an NBA basketball game at Madison Square Garden then there is on that game here,” Goodman said. “Think with regards to it, you going to sit around observing 10 guys run up and down the court for two hours without a great deal of cash going around? I didn’t think so.”

For my money, the owners and execs are the real criminals. They are vicious and vile, feasting on the flesh of children and old people. Just look at Al Davis. They loot the public treasury for a new stadium. They charge $8.50 for a beer. They assert their low-rent, second-rate organizations are perpetually “rebuilding”. They draft in an emotional manner unstable and intellectually shoal children, get them hopped up on Potential and mescaline and turn them loose on society. Then the players are cut loose after they become multiple felons.

It’s totally unlikely that owners and league executives may pass judgment on Las Vegas or legalized professional gambling on the basis of galore moral authority. They have more blood on their hands than most, and since they wouldn’t protest the urges of greed and temptation they don’t suppose any person else to either.

“They don’t realize the Nevada sports books and the league are on the same side,” Kornegay said. “We both want ‘true’ games. If any person gets hurt on a crooked game it’s the sports books. This is why we have so a lot of policies, regulatings and procedures to make sure the games stay true.”

Those are high stakes for casino owners and operators, particularly since they form the central cohesive source of support and stability of the local economy but stand to gain little from the presence of a pro team.

So you are resolving to get married. Maybe you are a established and want to plan an extravagant wedding with all the bells and whistles. If you are one of those, be ready to spend up to $30,000 for the night! Now, the night is not just any usual night. It is your wedding night; however, that is an investment, and a huge one at that. This likewise includes having to spend a lot of your time planning and preparing for respective accommodations that come with the wedding night. Various things like, wedding limousines, wedding djs, wedding cake, wedding invitation, wedding flowers, wedding banquet halls, wedding gowns and tuxedos and so much more! With so some things, it is no wonder why newlyweds and the families are so stressed out prior to the huge day.

So how do you alleviate all that stress and planning? One simple solution; get married in Las Vegas or Niagara Falls. Now why ought to you choose those 2 cities? According to Travelocity.com, Las Vegas and Niagara Falls have been indicated the wedding cities in the USA and Canada respectively. If you are Canadian, and choose to have a wedding that does not cost you upwards to $30,000, then escaping to a wedding city of your city is a definitive alternative. With so much to do in these unbelievable cities, why wouldn’t you want to get married in a place where you may gamble, take delight in an unbelievable night life, view a pretty picturesque natural resource all while having 100′s of wedding chapels to boot!

The one good when it comes to having a wedding in Las Vegas or Niagara Falls is that you refrain from all those costs and planning stresses that are affiliated with planning a huge wedding in a big city like Toronto, for example. You stay clear from the costs of setting up wedding limousines, wedding djs, wedding cake ordering, wedding flowers, wedding banquet halls and numerous more requirements all while getting married in a city as vibrant as Niagara Falls or Las Vegas. With the chapel facilities in Las Vegas and Niagara Falls accommodating so much, and you want to alleviate all that stress, then this is unquestionably your choice. Now, traditionalists would not even consider this as an option, however, for those who want to get rid of all that baggage that is coupled with a wedding, choosing Las Vegas or Niagara Falls is your pick

So in conclusion, weddings may add up to be the most pricey one day event of your lives. With wedding photographers, wedding limos and wedding djs having to be arranged and the banquet hall having to be booked, it is no wonder why so galore weddings are considered more stressful then enjoyable. However, all of this may be alleviated by merely choosing to have your wedding in Las Vegas or Niagara Falls, to 2 capital wedding cities in North America. With so a lot of wedding chapels to choose from go receive pleasure from and get married!

Going to Kansas City? Kansas City calls itself the “City of Fountains” and with good reason. It has more fountains than any city except Rome, and talk in regards to competing with European cities, KC ranks second only to Paris in the number of miles of it is grand Boulevards.

Located near the geographical center of the country, you’ll find KC to be a breathtakingly sophisticated and self-assured city. Though, no longer the “sin city” it once was, Kansas City offers adult amusement in the form of big time casino gaming. Locals call the Casinos “boats” even even though they are not boats and never move. You may play Las Vegas style games and slot machines at any of Kansas City’s four casino’s which are a short drive from, and very commodious to the downtown area.

Gaming in Kansas City, Missouri is not only big business it’s huge fun. Don’t suppose a rinky-dink, small-time operation. These Casinos are the real thing and almost rival anything found in Las Vegas. The major divergence however, is in a Missouri Law that stipulates a greatest or most complete or best possible loss limit of $500 (per 2 hour session), per person. You may stay in the Casino as long as you want, you just can’t lose more than $500 in a session.

If slot machines are your passion, you’ll be in heaven. Each of the Casinos offers hundreds if not thousands of slots. You’ll find the ordinary reel type “one armed bandits” along with a great deal of the new video slots. They come in all denominations from the very usual penny machines, to infrequently played $50 dollar machines. The majority of the slots in each of the casinos are now coinless. Winnings are dispensed by way of tickets, which may be placed in any other machine of your choice, redeemed at the cashier or cashed-in at kiosks allround the casino floor.

In addition, all of the casinos offer video poker machines along with a full assortment of ordinary table games. Three of the casinos offer Live Poker rooms where you may play Texas Hold-em and other poker games versus a table full of like minded players.

In Addition to gaming on the casino floor, all of the properties offer distinguishable and standard amenities. You’ll find themed restaurants, all-you-can-eat buffets, clubs and lounges, movie theaters, gift shops, Child Care, and respective amusement venues’.

Where to Go? Each of the properties is distinctive and is worth a look-see if you have the time. Listed according to size they are:

Ameristar Kansas City, features more than 140,000 square-feet of gaming space holds 2900 slots and over 100 table games, including the greatest poker room in the Midwest. Listed as one of the 10 greatest casinos in the U.S. The property features over 10 diverse dining venues and a Brew Pub on site.

Harrah’s Casino North Kansas City, not long ago remodeled and bringing you stimulating nightlife and outstanding new restaurants. Recently remodeled and themed as a Mediterranean village with charming streetscapes the casino emotes the warmth of old-world architecture and has a distinct European feel.

Isle of Capri Kansas City Plenty of Gaming Action with this casino and located the nearest to Downtown Kansas City. The feel of an old time riverboat on the outside and a tropical player’s paradise on the inside.
Have you ever imagined what it would be like to attend a Monday Night Football game live in Las Vegas? What would the NBA or NHL playoff experience fetch to ‘Sin City’? Or how in regards to an Opening Day MLB get started in the desert?

I may tell you incisively what it would be like. The back of your game ticket would be a scratch-off lottery game for lap dances and convertibles. There would be brilliantly lit slot machines in the bathroom stalls. At halftime, an opposing fan would be lowered into a cage and fed to a pair of white Bengal tigers. The marketers would be seven-foot mutants from Eastern Europe and the cheerleaders would be South American vixens.

And America’s Playground is the only city in the country that could perchance match that sort of frenzy and bacchanalia stride-for-stride.

The population of Las Vegas has tripled over the course of the last 20 years to 1.8 million, and it remains one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Its economy pumps out a staggering $72 billion annually, with almost 38 million tourists blowing through town each year and contributing their mortgage/retirement/child’s college fund to that honey pot. If we assume three-fifths of all Las Vegas visitors are sports fans – a measurement the Founding Fathers would approve – that would yield a pool of roughly 24 million fans to draw from.

“I’ve said before that just like Dallas is America’s Team, I genuinely think that a team in Las Vegas would be the World’s Team,” Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said. “We actually have the type of cosmopolitan persons out here that would hug the hometown team.”

Goodman is an outspoken, martini-swilling, showgirl-loving Philadelphia native and the ace in the hole for the city’s bid for pro sports. He is disarmingly honest, and has the guile and eagerness one would suppose from an attorney who applied to defend such remorseless mobsters as Meyer Lansky and Anthony Spilotro. Goodman is on record in support of canings and thumb amputations as punishment, and has shown up in public surrounded by Elvis impersonators.

They will be the basi non-NBA city to do so.

Sin City’s greatest strength is also it is biggest weakness when it comes to seducing a team into it is hypnotic trance. The reason there isn’t a team in Las Vegas already has little to do with being the 47th rated television market, it is lack of a state-of-the-art arena or it is graveyard of defunct pro franchises since 1976. No, Las Vegas doesn’t have a team today because it permits legalized gambling and is seen by galore as a modern Sodom and Gomorrah.

It’s unfeigned that gambling and hedonism are at the soul of Las Vegas. But that’s what gives it such a distinguishable kinship with Sports. Vegas is Switzerland with slot machines. The hometown dedication is to the point disseminate and each precious edge that she provides. People there are fans of everyone and no one, with allegiance based on whoever provides the best prospect for a payday. Sports fans in Las Vegas are mercenaries, bounty hunters and war profiteers. And it’s improbable that their attitude will ever change.

That is what strikes Fear into the rulers of the major sports. They are affrighted of point-shaving or players consorting with criminal elements. They are afraid of anything that could be viewed as a conflict of interest and their hard-line stance versus gambling is done in an venture to preserve the integrity of the game. (That is, the integrity remaining after sham officiating, performance heightening drugs and uneven distribution of wealth.)

Needless to say, this stance by owners and executives is the height of hypocrisy. Goodman stated that the NFL’s public actions and outward opposition to gambling is “the most disingenuous reasoning” that he’d ever heard. He also believes there’s already illegal gambling at live sporting events in most other sports.

“There’s more bets taken for the duration of an NBA basketball game at Madison Square Garden then there is on that game here,” Goodman said. “Think regarding it, you going to sit around observing 10 guys run up and down the court for two hours without a heap of cash going around? I didn’t think so.”

For my money, the owners and execs are the real criminals. They are vicious and vile, feasting on the flesh of children and old people. Just look at Al Davis. They loot the public treasury for a new stadium. They charge $8.50 for a beer. They assert their low-rent, second-rate organizations are constantly “rebuilding”. They draft with regard to emotions unstable and intellectually shoal children, get them hopped up on Potential and mescaline and turn them loose on society. Then the players are cut loose after they become multiple felons.

It’s out of the question that owners and league executives may pass judgment on Las Vegas or legalized professional gambling on the basis of some moral authority. They have more blood on their hands than most, and since they wouldn’t protest the urges of greed and temptation they don’t suppose anybody else to either.

“They don’t realize the Nevada sports books and the league are on the same side,” Kornegay said. “We both want ‘true’ games. If anybody gets injure on a crooked game it’s the sports books.

Those are high stakes for casino owners and operators, exceptionally since they form the central cohesive source of support and stability of the local economy but stand to gain little from the presence of a pro team.

In the 1970s a handful of brewers in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia were tired of the traditionalisti light and flavorless American beers and started out exploring ways to make better beer brewed from local ingredients. The “microbrews” (as they were in the first place called) caught on, and the Northwest quickly became the center of the craft beer motion that is now flourishing and spreading throughout the United States, Canada, and the world.

I’m now planning a third trip in July 2011 and will unquestionably be taking Lisa’a book with me. I’ve already visited numerous of the brewpubs and bars listed in Seattle, Portland, Eugene etc amd it’s interesting to read the background info on a good deal of of the bars, brewweries and micro breweries. The Pacific North West is for me (i’m from The UK) unquestionably Beervana.

The book is a highly interesting, informative (and at times educational) guide to beer drinking in the NW USA (and Canada) featuring guides to each area, background data on the pubs, beers and breweries as well as utile pub crawls and maps. I will be unquestionably taking the book with me on my next trip and putting it to good use.
Recommended for any one into beer tourism!
