Giants year by year

The title is a bit deceiving as it’s more a year by year history of the Giants than a biography of Wellington Mara. Of course, Mara was intricately involved in the history of the Giants, so there is a lot about him in here. However, most subjects are covered very broadstroke as the Giants have a long history – covering the whole span was a pretty big job in itself. There’s also some interesting content in the begining on Mara’s father, Tim, the Giants’ founder.

Overall, it’s not a bad read and recommended for anyone who wants to know about the history of the Giants.

PS There’s a handful of proof reading errors. They don’t detract from the book, but they are unusual to see.

Interesting, but disappointing book

As a lifelong Giant fan, I was really looking forward to reading this book on their long-time owner, Wellington Mara. Although many aspects of the volume were interesting, I ultimately came away from the book feeling disappointed.

The author crams in a lot of facts (dates, names, etc.), but at the expense of readability. Toward the end, he takes up several pages listing each of Wellington and Ann Mara’s children, mentioning where they went to school, what they do for a living, their spouse’s names (along with their school and occupations), the dates and locations of their marriages, and even who the officiant was that performed the ceremony. I didn’t find this information pertinent to the book. It almost felt as if the author needed to add this “extra” material to meet his word count.

For me, the most enjoyable parts of the volume were Devito’s discussion of Timothy J Mara (Wellington’s father), the early days of the Giants, and the formation of the league. The first third of the book pretty much deals exclusively with Timothy J Mara and his exploits. Therefore, the title of this book is misleading.

There were numerous typographical errors throughout the book – to the point that I found it distracting. For example, on page 251, Devito refers to John Mara’s wife, Denise Walker. In the following paragraph, her last name is listed as “Walter.” Any decent copyeditor should have caught those kinds of mistakes.

I felt as if the author glossed over a lot of potentially interesting topics. Granted, it is hard to condense nearly 100 years of history into a 300-page volume. However, it was really unnecessary to repeat (several times) the exchange between Wellington and Frank Gifford about how they felt like “father” and “son” to one another.

I struggled with the author’s writing style. At times, it felt as if he was jumping all over the place, with no real sense of direction. It seemed as if he was going for a chronological history of the Giants, but because he would go back and forth, the text was hard to follow sometimes.

I really wanted to like this volume. I really did. I feel as if this book could have been so much more, but the bad editing and writing style really hindered it.

Must Read for True Giants Fans

This book tells the history of one of the classiest men in the history of not only the NFL, but all of sports. Even those of you who are not Giants fans could appreciate Wellington’s contributions to the NFL after reading this book. It’s so much more than just a Giants history lesson (as so many books before it unfortunately are).

Only glaring issue was the score for Superbowl XXI was wrong — ouch!

Overall this is absolute must read for Giants fans of all ages. “Wellington” reminded me why I live and die with this team.

Inefficient and unmotivating!!

For all the hype people give Barron’s, this product was sub-par. From math errors, to poorly explained questions, I was generally unpleased with the content for the price. This book could have been much more concise. I lost interest after the first fifty pages, and that didn’t even include any practice problems. I already knew most (if not all) of the concepts it introduced from school, making it redundant and boring. I was much more satisfied with perfect800.com, which gave me virtually unlimited practice problems. It also had a game-like feel, so studying wasn’t as boring. Save your money, this product is NOT worth the buy!

Good, but flawed.

Throughout history, theaters have traditionally been places that humans go to for entertainment. The theatre is a place where people may go to receive pleasure from an opera, ballet, play or a movie. Of all of the forms of amusement that take place in the theatres, movies are a newer art form. Other forms of amusement have taken place for centuries but going to the theatre to see a movie introductory made it’s mark in the early portion of the 20th century.

A movie theater was in the first place called a movie palace. They were beauteous structures where silent films were shown and then later, films with sound. One of the initial movie palaces was built in New York City in 1913. The success of movie palaces were based on it is low admittance price and unreserved seating. During this time, most theater productions were Vaudeville acts which were more highpriced and harder to get seats than going to the movies.

Between 1914 to 1922 there was an elaboration of movie palaces. There were approximately 4,000 new theaters built in the United States built for the duration of this time. Popcorn was introductory served in movie theaters in 1912 as a cheap and delicious snack. In 1907 a movie cost only five cents. This is genuinely where the name “Nickel”odeon came from when referring to movie palaces.

The original air conditioned movie theater was built in 1922. And the initial multiplex for movies was built in 1963. This complex had two full screens and 700 seats. The firstborn drive in theater was built in 1933 and was in the state of New Jersey. The drive-in theater was very popular for the duration of the 1950′s and 1960′s but they have now diminished to a few hundred around the United States.

The firstborn permanent movie house was built in 1902 in California. This theatre was a storefront setup that was percentage of a factory building. In 1905 in Pittsburgh, the primary nickelodeon was built. This theater had five cent movies accordingly the name nickelodeon. They soon became very ordinary and disseminate all around the United States. In Canada, the basi big scale movie theater in the world was built. This was the initial time multiple movies were shown in one facility.

During the 1950′s and 1960′s, some theaters were built throughout the country due to their growing popularity. The theaters were built to attract more patrons. The screens became more prominent and the facilities became more elaborate. The number of seats a theater could hold increased. The theaters included more comfortable seats, air conditioning and stereophonic sound systems.

As the popularity of the movie theaters continued to go, so did the size of the facilities. Large multi-plex theaters were built around buying goods centers. The theaters had stadium seating with multiple balconies. The lobby sizes expanded to capacity other theater rooms within the complex. Multiple restrooms and concession counters were installed. The seats were built on an elevated floor to provide visibility for all seats.

Many other venues were built to show movies. Drive-in movie theatres became very frequent for the duration of the 1960′s. These were outdoor theaters were cars parked infront of an outdoor screen. Moviegoers would watch the films either in their cars or on top of the hood of their car. They were provided with portable speakers to listen the sound or in a good deal of cases the sound came from an FM radio frequency. There are only a few drive-in movie theatres available today.

The Corporate Dragon is not a living being – neither humane nor animal.  It’s true identity is General Accounting Ledger #701-1 a/k/a the Corporate Dragon.  It’s mere existance in the Corporation’s accounting system invites Management employees, who have any inclination toward dishonesty, to manipulate it for personal benefit.  701-1 beckons to such laborers to employ it as an untraceable method to embezzle funds from the Company.  Eventually the Dragon rises up and strikes out at the perpetrators – demolishing their careers and lives.  The indispensable Protagonist, Robert Sterling Powers, is a middle aged Corporate Executive employed in a United States multi-billion dollar Commercial Finance Corporation named TMA, Inc. headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota as a TMA Branch Manager.  In that position he is pressed into the task – by Senior TMA Management – of unraveling a multi-million dollar fraudulent scheme concocted by a few unscrupulous TMA Executives.  Over a amount of time of months he and his Fiancee, Penny Olson, travel extensive all around the United States visiting key TMA Company Branch Offices of which there are a total of thirty six.  Before the unraveling of the system is completed, Powers and Olson receive death threats from the perpetrators and he is physically attacked by two hired hit-men in a dimly lighted parking lot.  Due to his skillfulness in a special form of Martial Arts he survives the attack.  For his and Olson’s personal security, he deems it necessary to install a highly sophisticated Electric Eye Alarm System surrounding his private residence near Minneapolis.In all there are ten perpetrators involved.  One committs suicide, another suffers a fatal heart attack – and the other eight are dealt strange and severe punishment for their sins versus the Company.  The Corporate Dragon is slain but leaves as it’s bequest an unsolved mystery that perplexes TMA Senior Management.

About the AuthorSchneider is a retired Corporate Finance Executive.  He chose early retirement from Itt Corp after ten years of employment.  Previously he served fourteen years in Executive positions at Finance America, a former completely owned subsidiary of Bank of America.  During his some years of employment and association with U.S. National Financial Corporations, he lived and worked on the East and West Coasts of the United States.  The respective executive positions he held required him to travel to a heap of major cities all around the U.S. and Canada.  Over a amount of time of four decades he was immersed in each aspect of the complexities of Corporate Finance accounting controls, management styles of high Corporate Officers, court room legal procedures and conflicts amid lawyers of opposing parties.From 1970 through 1993 he owned various sailboats and became a very accomplished sailor.  He qualified for and held a United States Coast Guard license ‘to carry passengers for hire’ for twenty years.  Among his experiences aboard sailing craft are cruises in the Caribbean and four of the United States Great Lakes.

Outstanding drama.

An exciting story of a multi-billion dollar financial Corporation littered with fraud, embezzlement and the eventual assainations of the perpetrators involved. The Novel begins strong, progresses rapidly with mystery, intrigue and Executive turmoil. Once started it is difficult to lay down. Very highly recommended.

Completely Mesmerized

WOW!! Corporate Dragon is an awesome adventure. This book takes you away as if you are actually there; from real life living to adventurous vacation sailing. I was very impressed with the Author’s writing ability. I wanted the book to go on forever; I could not put it down. I had to continue reading to see what was going to happen next. I am looking forward to another book written by this Author.

LOTS OF LOCAL DISCOVERIES ….

I have used Frommer’s guide books since Europe on $20.00 a day and can’t begin to tell you how many things that I have ‘discovered’ through them. This is the brand new 2011 Chicago edition and again, I have found many unexpected things to do and see on my upcoming first trip to Chicago. One of my ‘great discoveries” is a huge light store, not far from where we will be staying! That may sound silly, but local things like that, really make our trips. I’ve checked them outline and found that they ship for free when purchases are made in the store – so one guess what I hope to purchase and have sent home.

The initial Saturday in May is the Kentucky Derby. For me it means seeing a good deal of distinctive limousines rolling through Louisville Kentucky. The Derby attracts all sorts of celebrities and stars. They come to town as well as limousines for not only them but also other VIP’s who need to get from party to event and back again. I actually take pleasure in seeing them come to town and I hand my kids cameras to see if they may get a picture of a star.

I have oftentimes wondered why celebrities employed limousines to get around at major sporting events like the derby. The answer is simple. It makes the most sense! The parking fees alone are a killer for events such as the derby. Rental cars are hard to come by. Traffic is a bear and that ASSUMES you recognise where you are going. Renting a limousine takes care of all of these details and more.

Gone are the worries when it comes to a indicated driver. Mint juleps may be consumed with no worries in regards to how to get home after the race. The limo is only a phone call away and you get delivered to the rectify gate at Churchill Downs with zero problems. What a way to go! No wonder it is worth the expense!

If you choose to go this route though, you will need to plan early and call in front to the local limousine companies so that they may reserve you a car. These once a year type of events seem to have each limo in town booked solid. Many, in fact, are called in from neighboring areas and from around the country. The Louisville based drivers get to return the favor to drivers in Indianapolis later in the month with the running of the Indy 500.

All in all, using a limousine for a sporting event such as the derby is a smart move. It is cost effective provided that you have at least a few humans and it is fun. You may kick back, relax and take pleasure in the race!
